Solar Panels: Go Off the Grid Now!

It’s everyone’s wish to not have to deal with electric companies; to be energy independent. Is it possible though? It all depends on where you live and how much time and money you can commit to your energy system.

It’s important to take into consideration where you live. What’s the climate like throughout the year? Is it sunny or cloudy for most of the year? This is important since solar panels need sunlight to generate electricity. If your climate is sunny overall, you also need batteries to store the electricity in order to have energy at night or on cloudy days.

This is the expensive part. In order to store enough electricity for a series of overcast days you’ll need to purchase and maintain large DC (direct current) batteries. You’ll also need a large enough space to store these batteries and to keep in mind that eventually you’ll need to replace them.

Aside from your solar panels and battery storage it’s a safe and smart idea to have a back up generator. A back up generator will last beyond your battery storage and can be useful for those long lasting days of cloudy weather. The generator will need fuel, which means extra storage space, and they usually user diesel fuel or gas. But in order to keep things environmentally friendly it’s a good idea to use bio-diesel. Getting off the grid is possible but expensive, complex and time consuming.

Another possibility is called “Net metering”. It might be available by your local utility company. Net metering is a way of decreasing your electricity bills while still having power at night or during a long stretch of overcast days. This way you use your solar panels for electricity during the day and the electricity company’s electricity at night and you save yourself from having to store batteries and generators. You won’t be 100% electricity independent but you will definitely save significant amounts money and energy.

Getting completely off the grid is possible if you have the right climate, space, time and money. However, if you live somewhere with little space a temperamental climate and you don’t have the time to devote to getting off grid then net metering is a better match for you.

How Solar Panels Could Benefit Energy Resources

In the midst of economic turmoil, many schools are facing their own financial crises. Public schools get their funding in large part from tax collections from the citizens. When families struggle, financial spending is cut down, reducing the amount of sales tax revenues generated.

A major expense for most school systems is their energy expense, so it is realistic to conclude that looking at ways to save energy will reduce expenses. States such as Texas have moved their schedules a few weeks around to expand daylight saving time. Yet it has been proven that daylight savings time does not save energy.

Many older schools, and even newer schools that were poorly constructed, can save energy now by converting their buildings into green buildings with some relatively simple changes.

To use energy savings wisely installing automatic entrance doors should be considered first. Two walk-through doors specifically installed as automatic entrance doors save a considerable amount of energy by keeping more of the heated or cooled air indoors.

Schools can also install replacement windows to save energy. Designed to keep considerably more of the heated and cooled air indoors newer, energy efficient windows are the way to go.

Considering ways schools can use energy and considering how solar panels could benefit energy resources any energy analysis program at a school would not be complete.

After a school has fully analyzed and reduced the way it is consuming energy, it should also look at improving the source of energy. The sun is an almost daily source of free energy in many parts of the country, shining its energy down on the school’s roof and grounds.

Energy for schools can be harnessed for “free” through Solar Panels. If enough solar panels are installed, in summer months when many schools are closed and energy use is low, the empty school can actually be making money as the solar power starts turning the electric meter backwards and supplying the power company with energy.

While solar panels can be expensive, consider the much more cost-effective kits on the market. Detailed instruction on how to complete the construction of a solar panel are easy enough for even a non skilled do-it-yourself person to complete. The solar panels could be constructed by the school district’s maintenance staff, a team of parent volunteers, or even community volunteers.

Adding solar power as a source of energy, schools will in turn save energy and financial resources a ways to both decrease energy consumption.

What is a Solar Panel System?

If you are really interested in saving the environment and reducing your electricity costs you should invest in a home solar panel system. Contrary to popular belief, these panels are not very costly. They are the only alternative of reducing the costs of electricity that are increasing every year. The main advantage of using such a system is that sunlight is free and inexhaustible and these panels are powered by sunlight. Think of it as a free for life powerhouse. Just think of the savings you shall be making per month on power bills without reducing electricity consumption. If this is not sufficient reason for you to go ahead and install a photovoltaic panel, think of the contribution you are making towards saving the environment.

Till a few years back, these photovoltaic cells and panels were quite costly, but with mass production the costs have come down drastically and they have come down to a range affordable by all. While the readymade panels are still a bit costly, nothing like what they used to cost before, the do it yourself kits are relatively cheap and cost around $700. A basic knowledge of using a soldering iron is more than sufficient to set up and configure such kits. When solar power is being converted into electric power, there are no harmful emissions. The low cost of these kits ensure that they pay off for themselves in just a few months of use.

These kits are available at quite a number of stores or you can also search the Internet for them and order them online. Basically you need solar panels and mounts in which to affix the panels. These mounts are lightweight and constructed of aluminum and can be easily adjusted for both summer and winter. A battery is also required for storing the power generated by the panels during the day. You also need to invest in a trickle charge controller that ensures that the batteries are neither overcharged nor undercharged. They stop the flow of current if the charge of the battery goes beyond a permissible limit and ensures flow of current only when the battery charge has dropped below that limit.

You will also require an inverter for converting AC power to DC power. Though deep cycle batteries are best suited for the purpose, if you are on a budget, you can go in for the ones that are used by golf carts. You will require roughly 6 of such batteries for saving power from the photovoltaic cells during the day and then supplying them to your house during the night. The location of the solar panel system is an important issue. It should be located in such a place where they are exposed to the maximum amount of sunlight without physically moving them. The solar south direction is ideal and will ensure that your panel gets exposed to the maximum amount of sunlight without being physically moved. There are excellent guides & manuals available that will help you with your task.

And What if you could build it for less than $200? I don’t know about you but that is almost as much as my electric bill used to be. That’s right used to be.

You will save hundreds of dollars every time you get your power bill!

I was paying about $175 a month for electricity, with the recession and how electricity expenses keep going up (not to mention I don’t make that much money) I wanted to do something to get that price down. After some wide-ranging study I found a manual online that showed how to create your own solar panel, I have been paying a smaller amount than $30 monthly ever since.

With simple to pursue total instructions this makes for a enjoyable at home undertaking.

At first I thought I couldn’t do it, but the directions were so simple to follow I did not have any trouble. In fact my wife took to it quicker than I did. It was great fun, my wife my daughter and myself spent one Saturday building it and a couple of hours on Sunday hooking it up. The whole thing only cost about $185, since then we have built another one and together they supply over 75% of our power needs.

When you can easily learn how to make your own solar panel for less than $200, why wouldn’t you!

Seriously, why give money to those big power companies? And why pay to some solar power company thousands to install a system when you could easily do it your self? I don’t know about you but I am tired of all these big companies making billions while I struggled to pay my electric bill. Well not anymore, I took control of that situation and came out on top – I think I’ll build some wind power next.

DIY Homemade Solar Panels – Do They Really Work?

A lot of you reading this will be interested in building your own homemade solar panels. You will have read lot of information on them, but I am sure there is one question you would like answered above all, how effective are they or do they really work?

I first put together my first homemade solar panels quite some time ago now and I have had a good result so far. Whilst many claim you can get energy savings of up to 80% off your usual power bill most of you will find that you don’t reap this much initially, especially with your first homemade solar panels. The best way to start down the road of energy self sufficiency is to start small, aim to power a few devices at first, you will still be slashing cash off your monthly bill and possibly selling excess energy back to the grid.

Once you have made your first one, it is simply a matter of rinse and repeat, so you can become more and more dependent on solar energy. Perhaps initially look at running a few appliances such as your laptop, radio, television or even lighting, in time you will be able to add more and more as you build up your familiarity and expertise with the process.

You will still need to run some appliances, such as mains run ovens and air-conditioning using the power grid, as they draw massive amounts of energy, much more than even conventional solar power systems can provide (although there are some products like cookers that are now being produced that are designed to run on solar energy). As you increase the number of your homemade solar panels you will find you can get close to the 80% figure many enthusiasts have obtained.

So the short answer is yes! Homemade solar panels really do work!

How to Build a Solar Panel

Solar panels are becoming more and more popular recently mainly because of energy saving benefits they provide. Generally a solar panel is a device that collects sun energy and transforms it into any other energy you need – heating (producing hot water or any other fluids used for home heating) or electricity.

Solar panels used to be pretty expensive in the previous years; however there is a drop in their prices and some experts even predict their prices will decrease more in the coming years. Regardless of these facts there is still cheaper way to get a solar panel for your home. We will now describe how to build a solar panel.

First of all let’s see what tools and materials are needed. The good news is you don’t need any special tools but the ones you might already have at home – hammer, screwdriver, nails, screws, drill. For the panel itself you will need copper tube, aluminum sheet, timber, glass fiber wool, marine-ply sheet, and glass.

The construction of the solar panel should start with making the wood frame. It is best if you use durable wood for it in order to make it durable to any weather conditions. Once the frame is ready attach the marine-ply sheet at the back. Insert glass fiber wool inside to prepare the isolation for the absorber plate.

Clean thoroughly the aluminum sheet – it should be totally free of any oil. Coat it with zinc chromate or red oxide. This will form the absorber plate of the panel. When it is ready attach the copper pluming at the back of the plate. You can use copper clips or just make holes in the tube and the absorber plate and “sew” them together with a strong wire. Alternatively you can just solder them together however soldering aluminum is a task more suitable for a professional rather than DIY.

The next step in your guide on how to build a solar panel is pretty easy. All you need to do is to insert the absorber plate in the tray. You can use screws to attach it safely to the tray as well as cushion it with some aluminum baking foil.

Finally it is time to put the glazing. The thickness of the glass should be chosen in accordance with the size of the frame. Generally thicker glass is used for large panels while thinner can be used for panels sized up to 10 square feet. Get the glass cut to the size of your frame and place it inside. Seal it with any kind of sealant to keep it free of moisture.
