Building a Wind Turbine VAWT (19 of 46) drill mounting holes for optional 12V DC Motor
This turbine was designed to get the most out of direct drive PMA set-up (converted car alternator). However, there is no limit to the options that might be considered. There are very inexpensive DC motors that can be used as generators. I picked this one up for about $10 at a very popular auction site and it works. This turbine could be used to pump water and a small water pump could be mounted. Belt or gear drive systems to run a small generator at high speed could conceivable to mounted to this turbine. With all these considerations in mind there is no way I can demonstrate how to mount every option out there. I will show how I mounted my PMA. With an alternator you can have your batteries much further away than you could with a DC motor generator. The problem with DC is the resistance in the wire will quickly consume all your energy over long distances. That can be offset, somewhat, with heavy gage wire at medium distances. The advantage of alternating current is it can travel further when minimal loss due to resistance. Then just a simple rectifier at the batteries coverts the AC to DC for charging purposes.

IMPORTANT READ BELOW! – GET the CORRECT CASING MATERIAL! Note: in this video I give the wrong part number for the LP Products casing that you need to use. The correct LP products part number is 6106. The dimensions of the casing is 5/16″ x 2-3/8″. The casing I used in this video does work but not nearly as well, don’t use it. The turbine performed MUCH BETTER with LP products casing # 6106 5/16″ x 2-3/8. If you cannot find the LP products casing material Royal Mouldings LT makes a similar product. However, I have not tested their product outdoors and don’t know if they have casing 5/16″ x 2-3/8. They might have something close enough. If you use that email me with your results so I can post for the video. DO NOT USE WOOD CASING! You need the light weight synthetic casing for this project. The synthetic material is very similar to fiberglass in composition and weight. Otherwise you will need to build 16 custom wings from fiberglass to get the same results for your turbine. I learned the hard way the synthetic casing performs very good and holds up in the weather amazingly. Still I primed the material with some Kills Primer to protect it. Still holding up twos years on. IF you cannot find this product at one of the big box home centers then look for the following. Synthetic casing material 5/16″ x 2-3/8″ or as close to that size as you can find. Do not use decorative casing that does not have a smooth wing like top surface. See Turbine in action here www.youtube.com
Building Domestic wind turbines
If you’ve completed some research on the subject of domestic wind turbines you may be interested in how it’s possible for you to go ahead and build one yourself. The advantages to domestic wind turbines are massive, and in numerous cases are made all the more powerful when you construct and install the unit yourself. Here is a primer for getting started in the construction of such a gadget.
Of course the advantages to domestic wind turbines are massive. You will be eliminating or seriously decreasing your monthly electrical bill. You may also be doing your part to help the environment and decrease your country’s dependence on fossil fuels and other finite power sources.
Before you get started you may want a reminder of why you should be building domestic wind turbines instead of purchasing them. That’s because the costs will be significantly lower, and the job won’t be exceedingly difficult either. Pre-built units can cost in the thousands of greenbacks, but do it yourself kits can cost just a few hundred.
Now, on to the particular construction of the domestic wind turbines you’ll be using for your home electricity. Your prime concern has to be the amount of space you have to work with. Even more moderately sized installations are going to want a 6-8 foot wide space.
bigger domestic wind turbines may need a fifteen or 20 foot space. If you have a huge amount of open property this would possibly not be an issue for you, and assembling freestanding towers of this magnitude will not be obtrusive or cryptic. Otherwise, you’ll have to turn to a system that gets mounted on your roof.
You also have to think about the different basic components that you’re going to require. Domestic air turbines are actually and rather surprisingly uncomplicated.
The first and most blatant piece of domestic air turbines is what we all recognize instantly, the blades. The blades as discussed can be quite large, and special advancements in technology have produced blades that have special designs and can even rotate to match wind directional changes.
The blade will be attached to a generator which gets rotated as the blade itself is rotated by the wind. The entire unit will have to be attached onto either a freestanding tower or a rooftop mount. Additionally, you will need an electric converter which will translate that energy into harvested electricity for your house. Ultimately, you’ll wish to have a battery system that will store the power that’s bought.
Constructing domestic wind generators really does not have to be difficult. It’s also surprisingly inexpensive. Using just basic gear, so long as you have enough room to get the job finished, you can immediately start reaping the many benefits of domestic wind generators.

“Green” building for supercomputers
At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Terascale Simulation Facility (TSF), which houses some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold level certification under the US Green Building Council (USGBC) rating system. Completed in late 2004, the TSF is a 253000-square-foot building that houses Dawn (BlueGene/P), BlueGene/L and ASC Purple — Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) systems largely dedicated to stockpile stewardship. TSF represents an innovative design that emphasizes function over form.

Guide to Building Your Own Wind Turbine
Building a wind turbine power system not only brings major economic and environmental benefits, it can actually be an enjoyable project. This article will deal with the building of a wind turbine, and some of the related issues.
Wind turbines will allow you to generate free energy for your household, and are surprisingly easy and inexpensive to build. The weekend it takes to put together a turbine is more than worthwhile, when you take into consideration the permanent, free energy that results.
Putting together a wind turbine will require a few basic parts. These include a set of rotor blades, a rotor assembly, a generator, and a mounting plate for the turbine. Although it’s true that the ordinary hobbyist is able to put them together, the rotor and blades have to be aligned very carefully. It’s possible to buy these components pre-made if you don’t feel up to the challenge of building blades that have the correct pitch and shape. There are many designs posted on the web if you do go the route of building the blades yourself. The majority of wind turbines in use today have a three-blade design, which offers an ideal balance of rotation of stability. Next, you’ll need a platform that can spin in the wind, where the blades and rotor will be mounted. If you’re using a standard horizontal wind turbine, the blades will need to have the ability to orient themselves in accordance with the wind in order to rotate. The platform must also be able to rotate in order to accomplish this. This task also requires the use of a vertical rudder, mounted on the back of the platform. If you are interested in learning more about wind turbine blades, you can go to Wind Turbine Blade Design.
It’s crucial as well to use a suitable generator for your wind turbine. Different generators come in different sizes, provide different levels of output, and produce different types of current. It is possible to get a generator that directly outputs AC electricity, although the majority use DC. The generator is then attached to a shaft, which rotates along with the rotation of the rotor assembly. Most generators have one direction in which they can rotate in order to generate power, so make sure to have it set to match the rotation of your rotor. Once the generator is mounted and connected to the rotor, you can set up your new wind turbine in the best location available in terms of wind velocity and consistency. With a DC generator, you can, among other tasks, charge batteries and power certain small appliances. An ordinary inverter is all you need to convert the DC electricity to AC, which can then be used by most devices in the home. You can read Wind Power Generator for further info about wind power generators.
