DaAi Headlines 20100823 Making green HVAC works

Previously, we introduced you to the eco-friendly heating ventilating and air conditioning system, designed by the Harbin Institute of Technology — or HIT — in China’s northern Heilongjiang province, which uses sewage as a heat source and a heat sink. However, the system must have access to large amount of water at any given time. The problem is that sewage contains a lot of solid waste, and if it is not filtered, the system clogs up. Conventional water treatment and filtration are far too costly; thus, HIT has designed their own self-cleaning filtration system. ( Sewage helps heat hotel ) Situated by the Songhua River, in Heilongjiang Province’s capital of Harbin, this four star hotel has a hidden secret. In 2003, it decided to forsake traditional coal-fired boiler heaters and installed a greener HVAC, developed by the Harbin Institute of Technology. Hotel engineering department manager, Wang Shaoqi: “Oh, this heating system can keep room temperatures above 20 some degrees Celsius. It’s worth every penny. Back in 2003, when we had it installed, we estimated a four year return on investment, but now that coal prices have shot up, we can recover the cost of the system within a year.” ( Return on investment in 4 years ) In running a business, every penny counts. Using traditional coal-fired boilers, the 160-roomed hotel would need to purchase 3000 tons of coal a year for heating. With current coal prices at about 100 USD per ton, heating costs would be about 300000 USD

How the Internet can Green the Electrical Grid

Google Tech Talk April 13, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by S. Keshav. Several powerful forces are gathering to make fundamental and irrevocable changes to the century-old grid. The next-generation grid, often called the `smart grid,’ will feature distributed energy production, vastly more storage, tens of millions of stochastic renewable-energy sources, and the use of communication technologies both to allow precise matching of supply to demand and to incentivize appropriate consumer behaviour. These changes will have the effect of reducing energy waste and reducing the carbon footprint of the grid, making it `smarter’ and `greener.’ In this talk, I will demonstrate that the concepts and techniques pioneered by the Internet, the fruit of four decades of research in this area, are directly applicable to the design of a smart, green grid. This is because both the Internet and the electrical grid are designed to meet fundamental needs, for information and for energy, respectively, by connecting geographically dispersed suppliers with geographically dispersed consumers. Keeping this and other similarities (and fundamental differences, as well) in mind, I propose several specific areas where Internet concepts and technologies can contribute to the development of a smart, green grid. I hope that our work will initiate a dialogue between these two communities. (joint work with Catherine Rosenberg, University of Waterloo) Project site: blizzard.cs.uwaterloo.ca S. HELIOSTAT SUN SOLAR TRACKER SOLAR POWER FRESNEL LENS GREEN ENERGY

This is our first attempt at a useable Heliostat for our Fresnel Lenses. In future videos I will have all the information for a DIY system using very easy to find materials. We are developing a controller that is simple to program and can control any type of DC or even AC motors. Once completed I will share some open source information.

Green Machine Waste Energy Grinder

The Rev was engineered to meet the ever increasing demand of reducing the excess volume in waste, increasing air space, extending the life of landfills and minimizing landfill costs while reprocessing waste as a potential energy source. With a superior compaction rate, the Rev is on the leading edge of waste disposal, compacting waste materials that currently cannot be processed by any other system. The Rev removes moisture and reduces almost any input to 1″ minus useable product. Excellent for compost, recycling, or producing new fuel sources.
