There has recently been a huge abundance of information flooding the internet with regards to  the great benefits of solar and wind energy and how we should all be looking at ways to cut our energy bills and look for green energy alternatives at home.

It would appear that many more of us every day are actively searching for cheaper ways to produce electricity for our homes and this can only be a good thing. What is driving our search for cleaner cheaper, renewable energy sources could be down to any number of factors. High utility prices maybe one thing and the need for a greener environment may be another.

One thing is quite certain however – residential wind turbines can provide for both of these needs and they are cheap, quick and easy to build.

A recent survey has shown that almost 38% of people are willing to pay between $100 and $500 for residential wind turbines. However, even $100 is still too much to pay when you consider that I can show you a quick, easy and cheap way to build your very own energy producing Residential Wind Turbines right from your own home or garage.

You will require some good quality tools to work with. This is important as you are far more likely to produce a high quality wind turbine if the build tools are also of a high quality. You will also require the materials for your turbine, which, if you shop about for the best prices, you should be able to pick up fairly cheaply from your local hardware store. You can also consider using second hand parts although you could potentially be compromising on quality and efficiency of your wind turbine so think carefully if you are doing this.

Now for the single most important part – a high quality, detailed instruction guide. This is absolutely essential to your success in building your very own residential wind turbines and without it, your project will inevitably fail. Your guide should be structured, easy to follow and provide reference diagrams. Ideally you should have access to support and help should you require it. All of these factors will ensure that your project will go smoothly and should lessen the chance of you becoming confused and frustrated.

Residential wind turbines are great fun to build, provide your home with a clean, natural source of free sustainable electrical energy and they can literally slash your electric bills in half. They genuinely are cheap, quick and easy to build and they can be made by absolutely anyone regardless of DIY experience.

Residential Solar Thermal Generator and Water Heater

My invention for the BC Hydro Invent the Future Contest is a simple home based solar thermal power generator which would produce electrical energy as well as hot water for domestic use.

Build a DIY Home Residential Wind Turbine

The cost to set up a renewable energy source from the sun or wind can be very expensive if you get the installation from a company. You may have to spend more than $3,000 just to draw enough energy from a solar or wind power system. If you are interested in using alternative energy generated from wind power, then making a DIY home residential wind turbine is something worth consideration.

Building the wind turbine by your own may sound complicated, but it is not. In fact, once you understand the basic structure of a home residential wind turbine. You can build the system successfully with minimum cost.

When you start to search for information on internet for a homemade wind turbine, it returns thousands of search results with a lot of them in an amazing variety of designs and complexities. But, if you narrow down all the requirements to build a home residential wind turbine, they consist of five common things:

A generator Blades A tower to get it up into the wind A mounting to keep it turning An electronic control system

If you divide the DIY home residential win turbine project into these 5 little systems and work on them one at a time, you will find that building a wind turbine is not that complicated as you think initially.

If it is your first effort to build a home residential wind turbine, then building a generator from scratch can be a bit too complicated. A better option would be using surplus permanent magnet DC motors as generator in your project. Try searching for a suitable DC motor at your local store or you should be able to find one at online store like eBay. I would recommend the 99 volt DC motor made by Ametek, among the best motor I have found and it works great as a generator. However, other brands can also meet the purpose as long as you look for a motor that is rated as high DC voltage, low RPMs and high current. The key reason of finding this type of DC motor is that you want to set a generator to generate 12 volts at a fairly low rpm with a useful level of current. For example, a motor that is rated with 325 rpm at 30 volts when using as a generator, could expect to generate 12 volts at fairly low RPMs. Whereas, if you use a motor rated at 7200 rpm at 24 volts, it won’t be able to produce the required 12v output until it is spinning a few thousands of RPMs. Therefore, you should be careful when shopping for a right DC motor to be used as a generator in your wind turbine project.

Next, for the blades, you have option to make it from wood or PVC pipes. It is not difficult to make the blades, many DIY Wind Turbine guides do involve step-by-step guide on how to build them easily. Once you have gotten started on motor and blades, then getting the rest of little systems up to running are not difficult. Find a DIY wind turbine guide to help you in building the system can save your time by avoiding the common mistakes and ensure the project can be completed within the budget.

Summary

DIY a home residential wind turbine is not as complicated as it sounds. You can build it successfully to generate electric from wind to power your home.

Dave Stillman reviews various Home Energy Guides at http://www.wind-solar-power.info. Read his reviews before you buy any of these guides. Find the best step-by-step Home Energy Guides from Dave’s resources.

Factors to Consider Before Installing Your Own Residential Wind Turbine

Due to the ever increasing costs of electricity many homeowner have turned to renewable energy sources to power their homes and save on their electricity bill. And having Federal and State tax incentives only made the prices of these systems more affordable to the average consumer.

These are the reasons why interest in renewable energy sources is rising fast. Even though the most common systems nowadays are solar panels, residential wind turbines are fast catching up as the popular choice for homeowners. Solar panels were the most popular simply because it was non-evasive, but recent technology has made wind turbines a very viable choice of renewable energy for homeowners.

Wind power has a couple of advantages over other renewable energy sources but the cost is what really makes people think of getting them. A typical home turbine costs less than half the price of a same sized solar panel system. But there are some things that you need to consider before you buy and install your own wind turbine system; average wind speed, obstructions, the size of the lot it will be put in, and zoning regulations.

Most of the wind turbines being sold today have cut-in speeds of 6 to 8 miles per hour, if the wind in the area doesn’t reach these speeds the output of the turbine won’t be as large as you want it to be. It’s recommended that you first check wind maps of your area to check if there is enough wind passing through.

In placing your turbine, you must also consider the surroundings if there are obstructions. The turbine should be placed in an area that is free from obstacles that can block the passage of the wind or may create turbulence. The problem of turbulence can be solved easily by increasing the tower height. As a rule your turbine should be placed at least 30 feet higher than the surrounding obstacles in a 300 foot radius or if it the obstacle is too high then it should be at least 500 feet away.

The surrounding topography also plays a vital role in the efficiency of your wind turbine. Surrounding mountains, hills, and valleys all have an effect on the output of the turbine. The size of the lot where the turbine will be placed on should also be taken into consideration; the recommended area should be at least 1 acre so there would be enough placement options and will be able to conform to local zoning laws. Many communities have set laws on what properties will be able to support a wind turbine installation; these are primarily based on tower height and how far they should be set back from property lines. To avoid hassles you should check the local zoning and permits department of your city if you are allowed to place a wind turbine within your property.

Residential wind turbines are a very viable source of free energy; it’s clean, efficient, and helps decrease the carbon footprints you leave behind. Now, what’s keeping you from using one of these babies for yourself?

Are you ready to start generating your own energy? You can start building your own wind turbine as soon as this weekend by learning the information here.

Residential Wind Turbines

Many people think of massive towers with blades the size of 747 wings when you mention residential wind turbines, but the key word here is “residential”. You see, as technology has advanced, you can now install wind turbines in your home that will help generate free electrical energy.

The idea of residential wind turbines is not new. People have been using them for centuries to power pumps that would draw water up from wells, to be stored in tanks. The water in the tank would then have gravity to help offer instant water at a faucet in kitchens and bathroom.

Nowadays, however, residential wind turbines are more likely to be used to generate electricity, which can be stored in batteries and then converted into the correct voltage for your home appliances.

Many people even make their own residential wind turbine, so they don’t even have the cost of buying a professionally built unit, however, unless you are a skilled mechanic and/or electrician, building one is probably not the best idea for you.

The principle behind all wind turbines is the same; a generator (like the one in your car) is attached to a rotor consisting of aerodynamic wing-like blades. This is then attached to a tall structure and placed is such a position as to catch as much moving air as possible.

A weather-vane ensures that the blades always points in the direction of the wind, so that, regardless of wind-direction changes, your residential wind turbine is always going to work as efficiently as possible.

The positioning of the tower is important. If you live on the top of a hill, it needn’t be very tall because you are naturally in a good location to collect any wind, but if you live in a town and you are surrounded by houses, you will probably need to install your wind turbine on your roof. This will not always be allowed, especially if you live in an area that has zoning laws or if you are part of a Housing Association.

Residential wind turbines have come a long way in design over the past couple of decades for two reasons; firstly, the generators have become a lot smaller and more efficient. Secondly, and more importantly, the materials and design of the blades have become significantly better.

Some residential wind turbine blades don’t even look like airplane blades, instead looking more like upright bows, called a vertical axis wind turbine, and this design has proven to be among the most efficient and compact currently available. Many designs are being tested, and I have no doubt that soon the most efficient and effective design will become standard for all future turbines.

Here are some of the things to consider when choosing (or designing) a residential wind turbine:

1. How much power will it need to generate

2. What is the location (generally windy area?)

3. What local by-laws should be considered

4. What tax credits or grants are available

Before starting any project like this, it’s much better to do all of your research before you spend any money, that way, when you do decide to go ahead and invest in a residential wind turbine to help power your home, you’ll be able to install the most ideal turbine possible.
